The Top stocks page ranks the 200 stocks that appear in the most investor portfolios. It is a list of the companies that most people already own, with the figures you would want to know about each.

#Read the list

Open Top Stocks in the Finance section bar.

The Top stocks page: sector filter buttons above a table that ranks the 200 most widely held stocks, with price, today's change, market cap, day and 52-week range bars, one-year change and how much institutions hold

The most widely held stocks first. The buttons above the table filter by sector, and the number beside each is how many stocks it holds.

  1. 1Show one sector at a time
  2. 2Rank by number of portfolios holding it
  3. 3How many of the 200 each sector has
  • # is the rank, by the number of investor portfolios holding the stock. A small mark beside the rank shows the movement since the day before: ▲3 means up three places, ▼2 down two, and new means it was not on the list the day before.
  • The Name column carries the ticker and the company's sector.
  • Price and Today follow the live price. Mkt cap is the company's market value.
  • The range columns, Day range, Off day high, 52-wk range and Off 52-wk high, show where the price sits between its lows and highs. See Sort tables and read the range columns.
  • 1 year is the change over the last year.

Slide the table to its right-hand end for the last two columns.

The right-hand end of the Top stocks table after sliding it sideways: the one-year change, the number of institutions that report holding each stock and the share of the stock they hold, with a button at the left edge to slide back

Institutions and Held by institutions sit at the right-hand end of the table.

  1. 1Funds and firms that report holding the stock
  2. 2Their combined share of the stock
  • Institutions is how many funds and firms report holding the stock in their regulatory filings.
  • Held by institutions is their combined share of the stock, with a bar.

The list is refreshed several times a day.

#Filter by sector and sort

The sector buttons above the table, such as Technology or Energy, narrow the list. All shows every stock. Select a column heading to sort, for example Mkt cap for the biggest companies first or Institutions for the most institutional interest. The side card By sector shows how many of the 200 each sector holds, and More lists links to related pages.

Select a row to open the stock's page; select Follow on its page to add it to your watchlist. See Your watchlist.

#Common questions

What counts as an institution?

Funds and firms that must report their holdings to regulators. The count is how many of them report holding the stock.

How is this different from the Leaderboard?
